Gamblers hoping to get in on the action at the new Hollywood Casino York will have to wait a little longer.
York County casino drive spent $146 per vote in futile bid to win voter approval. Backers poured $8.8 million into a petition drive and referendum campaign that captured only 57,000 votes, likely. Supporters of the proposal make the argument that the new casino could bring jobs and a number of other benefits to the area. If the proposal were to be approved, York County could reap the benefits of millions in profits, which would be funneled in to schools, colleges, Maine's Native American tribes, veterans and a harness racing industry.
The casino, which is under construction at the former Sears store at the York Galleria, will not be opening by the end of this year as originally expected.
The opening date now is projected for the second half of 2021, Penn National Gaming spokesman Jeff Morris said.
Work on the casino entrance has started and can be seen when driving by.
Construction on the casino was temporarily halted to preserve money because of the uncertainty with the pandemic, according to the company's quarterly report. The company does not expect to spend as much as previously budgeted for it in 2020 for capital expenditures.

In addition, the Whiteford Road intersection — the one closest to the casino — turned into right-in and right-out access only.
The casino will open with 500 slot machines and 20 table games, but that number could grow to 750 slot machines and 40 table games as allowed by law.
It will feature a sports and race book, casual restaurant and bar, an entertainment lounge and a coffee venue, a news release states.
The 80,000-square-foot casino is expected to draw customers from south central Pennsylvania and northern Maryland, the company has stated.
